2012 Utah Open Recap

I played good enough in the Utah Open last year to be exempt for this year’s tourney.  I thought that it would be fun to play, maybe get the juices flowing a bit.

The thing is, I haven’t been able to play at all.  A couple months ago I tried to defend at the Black Diamond, and it was rough.  Ugly. Very rough.  I really wasn’t sure if I was making a wise decision to fork out the money to play last week.

I got off to an ok start on Friday afternoon with a 72.  I played solid golf, the course was a bit crusty.  Other than one late mistake, I felt pretty good about things.  Scores were low, I needed a good score on Saturday to make the cut.

I got off to a bad start on Saturday, making par on the par 5 first with a 6 iron second shot.  Bogey on 2 didn’t help.  I was in trouble.  I needed to get hot.

I got hot. 10 birdies later and I had a nice little 63 on the board. Fun.

Sunday was a little nerve wracking, but I kept making birdies.  I gave it a little run, and with a 66 ended up at -15 for the weekend, and -15 for the week.  Pretty solid, good enough for a T3 finish.  It was good to get in contention in a big tournament again.  Been too long.

It was a different week.  I felt a lot of pressure leading up to the start of the tournament.  Once things got going, I was surprisingly calm.  I was very unprepared to play tournament golf, really I’m not so sure I should have been playing.  Any glory last week can only go to God, because without Him my true talent and preparedness would have showed…

So, after a fun week golf, things have settled down.  Back to work (another blessing), and the kids are starting school!  Zac just turned 2, Lucy just turned 1, and the “Swilor Schoolhouse” has opened doors.  We will be in touch!

God Bless!!!

Preparation??

Family is good.  Work is good.  Golf…it’s a little rusty.

I haven’t played at all this year, so the recent decision to play in a tournament might not be all that wise.  But, we are excited, and it should be a fun weekend regardless.

In the week or so I’ve been hitting balls, things have been feeling better every day.  That is very encouraging, as the first nine I played was a catastrophe.  Got it under par the last time I played.

So, with a caddy like this on board, I am preparing:

His sister is my little Princess, and she loves helping us make sure we stay on plane:

Around an hour a day is the plan.  That isn’t a lot, but it is what we have.  8-9 month layoff and two weeks to prepare!  Might be crazy.  We’ll see how this weekend warrior thing turns out.

Still here

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted. Golf hasn’t come up a lot, so there hasn’t been much to say. I’ve played 9 holes over the last 6 months. Crazy.
The Swilors are doing great. My family is amazing, we are so blessed.  Zac is getting some game, and Lucy is our little sweetheart.

Hit a few putts today. Might play a few tournaments this year, might not.  We will see…

God Bless!

Update

Been awhile! Just wanted to give a quick update on where the Swilor family is at, and on golf as we know it.
Just after Lucy was born, we got approved to buy a new home, and I got a new job! A lot happened at once, and it has been a whirlwind. So, there has been absolutlely zero golf on the last 3 months.
We will see how much golf we get to play over the next year. I miss it, but real life is taking over, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I just feel blessed.
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Nationwide Tour Utah Championship

I played well in the Monday qualifier this week, so I got to play in my first Nationwide Tour event in 5 or 6 years.  I was pretty pumped.  I wasn’t planning on even playing the qualifier until the day before the deadline, and things just came together.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I felt pretty comfortable on the course during the tournament.  It was nice to have a little local support, and there was some cheering with my early birdies.  I was off to a good start in both rounds, running into a little trouble in the middle part of each day.  I battled, but 72-70 wasn’t good enough to play the weekend.

I was able to bring the family out to experience what tour life can be like.  They had a blast.  Having Nicki and Zac to breakfast in the family room brought me back to when I was a squirt tagging along with my dad.  Doesn’t get much better than that.

It was nice to get another taste.  Looking forward to playing better in the next one.

Black Diamond

Me and the fam went on a quick trip to the Black Diamond Open, and we brought back some hardware!
It has been a long time since I’ve been in contention, so it was a battle down the stretch.
My scores have been good this year. All the glory goes to God!
Back to work now. There will he some big tournaments next month, for now I will continue to be a weekend warrior…

2011 May Update

I haven’t played much this year, but the rounds I’ve gotten in have been really good. I will be updating both the Results and Stats links on the top of this page, so they will be current even if I’m not posting as much.

One if the things I’ve struggled with in golf and life in general is trusting God, so I’ve been working on that. This year on the course I’ve had a big chunk of adversity early in every round, but unlike in years past I’ve been able to focus on each shot, letting go of what has happened earlier in the round. My dad has been able to watch me play a couple of times this year, and he commented on how much more at ease I seem. This is a big change, so praise God because He has really been helping me in this area.

Another big change I’ve made is on the putting green. My putting over the last few years hasn’t been bad, but there wasn’t any “spark.” I finally decided to give a belly putter a try. The day before the Spanish Oaks Open I plugged one of my old putters, threw on a long grip, and so made a belly putter. The results? Game changing. My confidence on the greens is incredible, and it feels like I finally have that spark I’ve been looking for. And my results have shown that.

So, although I now am able to play only once or twice a week, my game has been maturing. I am very much looking forward to getting in contention in a few tourneys this year.

Family Update: Nicki and I are having a blast raising our son Zac. We are so thankful for the joy he brings us every day. We are also super pumped that his little sister is scheduled to make an appearance in September! Wow, that is exciting!

2011

Practice has officially begun for the 2011 season. Won’t have as much time to work on the game right away, so we’ll get an idea of what it’s like to be a weekend warrior.
I’ve started bringing a little “muscle” to my practice sessions. Who would mess with this guy?

Back at it…

Just found the best caddy in the world, so I have to give it another shot.

It’s Not Fat, It’s Muscle

Just checking in. Great golf tournament this weekend. Graeme has had a great year, really fun to watch. That tournament definitely seems like one of the best tournaments of the year. Christmas-time, great course, good weather, great field, boat loads of money. It has always gotten me motivated.

So…beginning tomorrow to practice. The new year is almost here, and that means some tournaments are on the horizon. I’m missing the Nevada Open and the Utah Pro-assistants this week, but it will be nice to get out and hit a few.

I’ll be playing as much as possible in 2011, although most of my golf may be on the weekends (that’s when tournaments happen). We’ll see what happens, but I’ve stumbled into a pretty good gig, and family is a big thing to take care of…

I thank God every day for putting me right where I’m at, and I’m going to make the most of every opportunity I get. Whether it’s in the golf world or somewhere else, I’ll be ready.

Life Update

I got the job!!! (see last post)! We’re so thankful, it was in answer to our prayers. Nicki is going to get to stay home with little Zac. That is VERY good! I’ve been at it for a little over a week, and it’s been great. I got lucky, it’s a great company.
Where does this blog go?? Who knows. Is the story of a weekend warrior something that people want to hear about? Maybe, maybe not, but that has never really been what this site was about. This site has been about keeping in touch with people who cared. I think those people will hang around. Other than that…I’m going to keep telling my experiences on and off the course. Golf is not over. I’m looking forward to some new challenges.
Thanks for hanging.

Our little boy Zac got his shots today. That is a tough thing. He’s pretty tough, but having a hard time. Hope he starts feeling better soon.
